Region: The Visa Issue

Prime Minister Boiko Borissov and Foreign Minister Nikolai Mladenov are the latest in a long line of senior officials from Bulgaria to lobby for the waiver of United States visa requirements for Bulgarian citizens – and Borissov has linked the issue to the country’s ambitions to join the Schengen visa zone in 2011.

In New York for meetings around the annual opening season of the United Nations General Assembly, Borissov told journalists that he would use talks during his visit to urge US services to agree to waive visa requirements for Bulgarians.

Given that Bulgaria hopes to become part of Europe’s Schengen visa zone in 2011, Borissov said that once this happened, it would not be appropriate for Bulgarians to need visas to visit the US…
