Solidarity Picnic on Plac Szczepański

Organised by the group Stowarzyszenie Maj 77, the celebration is called “Free in our solidarity. Let’s meet after 30 years…” The family-friendly entertainment will be focused on bringing together the participants of the Solidarity movement and other anti-communist government opposition in the Małopolska region. It will take place all day on Sunday, 29 September at Plac Szczepański, with a commemorative plaque unveiling at 1:00 pm at the first Solidarity headquarters in Małopolska, ul. Karmelicka 16.

“The picnic will be a meeting of friends, people who met 30 years ago while forming the inter-industry trade union in their work places, or even before, while taking part in other forms of anti-communist opposition. People who together organised the structure of Solidarity and today would like to meet after many years, refresh their memories of those times and pass on the knowledge of them to those who are too young to remember,” reads the website of the organisers.

To recreate the atmosphere of the past, the organising committee has prepared a vast array of events and activities. The “Loch Kamelot” troupe will perform a cabaret sing-a-long of songs from the last 30 years, the MPK orchestra will play, Joanna Słowińska will give a concert, and a two-part marathon will screen documentary films. Participants will have the opportunity to register their own history or leave a personal message with the association. There will also be a craft corner, quizzes and games, photo studio and exhibition, among other attractions. More specific information can be found online at www.maj77.org.pl.
