Low-cost Germanwings leaves Krakow

Beginning with the summer schedule on April 1, all flights from Germany will be directed to the Katowice International Airport in Pyrzowice. All passengers en route from Bonn and Stuttgart will land in Katowice.

Germanwings representatives did not comment to the newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza on the decision to change Polish airports They have only emphasized that Katowice is one of the most important economic and scientific centers in Poland.

The Slovak low-cost airline Sky Europe made a similar move a few months ago. This carrier liquidated its base in Balice and reduced the number of flights there. Today Sky Europe offers only flights to Vienna from Krakow.

Germanwings is one of the biggest low-cost airlines.
Its co-owner is Lufthansa, the largest airline in Germany. The airline was established in 1997 as Eurowings and was renamed Germanwings in 2002.

It is wholly owned by Eurowings, which in turn is fully controlled and 49 percent owned by Lufthansa.

Germanwings flies to 66 destinations in Europe. Its main base is Cologne Bonn Airport, with secondary bases at Stuttgart, Berlin-Schonefeld, Hamburg Airport and Dortmund. Germanwings' main UK base is at London's Stansted Airport.

The airline has 27 aircraft: Airbus A319s and Airbus A320s. In 2007, Germanwings carried more than 7.1 mln passengers.
