A call by Muslim religious leaders to change Bulgaria’s rules on identity document picture to allow Muslim women to be veiled when photographed has reawaken debate about religious symbols in the country – even as Bulgaria makes common cause with Italy and several other countries against a ruling by Europe’s highest court against the display of Christian crucifixes in schools.
The Smolyan regional mufti’s office wrote to the regional police headquarters asking that Muslim women be allowed to be photographed while wearing headscarves. Reportedly, the Sofia-headquartered Chief Mufti’s office has backed the call.
