Frustrated plane passenger eats winning scratch card

While budget airline Ryanair has been known to charge steep prices for its in-flight meals, one passenger consumed what may well be the most expensive meal onboard an airplane. On a Ryanair flight from Krakow to East Midlands Airport, a passenger ate a scratch card worth 10,000 euro.

The unnamed passenger won the prize on flight FR1724 on 25 February. However, when the crew informed the lucky man that he could collect the 10,000 euro prize from the scratch card company upon his arrival in the UK, the man became angry that he would not receive the cash right away and proceeded to eat the scratch card.

Following the incident, Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara stated, “In the last two year’s Ryanair’s scratch cards have given away 10 cars, over €300,000 in cash prizes and over 100,000 flight vouchers. Passengers have always been delighted to claim their large cash prizes after returning home. Unfortunately our latest winner felt that we should have his €10,000 prize kicking around on the aircraft."

The airline, along with the scratch card company Brand Force, have decided to donate the prize money to one of five charities, which will be decided through an online vote. Mr. McNamara added, "Ryanair is now asking passengers to vote on which type of charity Ryanair should donate the €10,000 prize money to with one charity from anger management, eating and digestive disorders to disruptive children’s and mental health charities now set to benefit from a real meal ticket!"

Ryanair has set up a voting page where users can vote until Friday, 5 March, when the results will be revealed.
