Łukasz Kubot surprises Andy Roddick

In the opening round of the ATP tournament in Beijing (China), Polish player Łukasz Kubot (number 143 on the ATP world ranking) caused a major sensation by beating top player Andy Roddick (USA), 6:2, 6:4. Roddick was ranked third at the tournament and sixth on the ATP world ranking. Polish media have cited the victory as being the most significant in men's tennis since the days of Wojciech Fibak.

Simultaneously for the ladies, Cracovian Agnieszka Radwańska defeated Swiss Patty Schnyder 6:4, 6:1 in the tournament’s second round, facing Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez from Spain in the third round of the WTA tournament in the Chinese capital.
