A 19-year-old man died on Tuesday night (Dec 10) from injuries sustained during a street fight involving eight or nine individuals. Local, Polish media are describing the incident as a ‘hooligan feud’ and a ‘night of reckoning.’
The confrontation took place at about 9pm, outside a Polo supermarket on the Piast housing estate in the Mistrzejowice district, north of Nowa Huta.
According to police, gang members were armed with machetes and knives. The fight is thought to have been part of a long-running feud between gangs involved in the sale of drugs.
The victim, identified only as ‘Piotr’, was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. Another injured man was also taken to hospital, but his wounds are not thought to be life-threatening.
By Wednesday morning, police had detained six people on suspicion of involvement in the fight. All have criminal records, as did Piotr, who had convictions for shoplifting and narcotics offences.
