Krakow Photomonth Festival 2013

Krakow is an impressively photogenic city that also happens to host one of the major photography events in Europe – Krakow Photomonth. The festival has grown from humble beginnings in 2002 and now attracts major exhibitions from world famous practitioners while continuing to support and encourage young, home- grown photographers.

This year’s theme is fashion – not just the glossy images of beautiful models that grace fashions mags, but every aspect of what we wear and what it says about us, as captured by a highly diverse range of photographers. As usual, the main programme is supplemented by more than enough events, meetings and master classes to satisfy any lens jockey.

The festival runs from May 16 to June 16. For full details: www.photomonth.com

The Limits of Fashion

The main programme opens with an exhibition entitled The Limits of Fashion, which features work from 20 photographers or photographic teams. Held at Bunkier Sztuki (Plac Szczepański 3a), Photomonth’s organisers describe it as: “the key to understanding the broad definition of fashion adopted for the… whole of this year’s festival programme.”

ShowOFF 2013

The ever-popular ShowOFF section, which showcases the work of young Polish photographers, is bigger and better than ever before this year. Among a record number of submissions for the 2013 show was work from Ukrainian, Belarusian and Czech photographers for the first time. The work of ten photographers will feature in exhibitions at galleries around the city.

Other events

Photomonth’s accompanying events are an integral part the festival programme. The whole month will see workshops and meetings with artists, including, this year, the new Masters Series meetings – an opportunity to meet and get to know interesting artists. Additionally, Portfolio Review is a unique opportunity to get valuable tips from experts.

Once again, Photomonth will include the hugely popular outdoor slideshows known as SlideNite. The shows will be divided into thematic blocks: the most interesting Polish photo- reportage of the last year, covers from leading contemporary and historical fashion magazines, and a presentation of the results of the international photo.mov photography competition. As if that wasn’t enough, there is a whole raft of events under the Krakow Photo Fringe umbrella. Get involved at: www.krakowfringe.com.

    Hi David,
Me and my wife moved to Krakow this February. My wife is a Photographer by hobby and is very keen to learn more in the field. She is already posting her photographs in facebook group ‘Krakow Photography Group – Online Album’. She is more willing to do some field work. Can you suggest some schools, clubs where she can get these opportunities.
