Apparent Suicide Attempt Caught on Camera

A Polish military prosecutor shot himself this morning at a press conference in Poznan to discuss issues surrounding the April 2010 Smolensk air disaster that killed former President Lech Kaczyński.

After reading a statement, Colonel Mikołaj Przybył asked journalists to leave the room for five minutes so he could “air it.”

A television news camera left running in the room recorded Przybył ushering journalists out and saying: “Close the door properly.” Seconds later there is the sound of a firearm being cocked, followed by a single shot and the colonel’s body falling to the floor.

The video footage is available on the website of Polish news channel TVN24.

The lawyer is severely wounded but, according to the hospital where he was taken, stable and conscious.

Przybyl had been defending the Prosecutors Office from allegations that it tried to access private text messages from journalists’ phones via mobile phone providers. The operators refused to release the information stating the request was illegal.

Poland’s Attorney General Andrzej Seremet was due to announce his decision on the allegations of malpractice against members of the Military Prosecutors Office in Poznan.

Colonel Przybyl claimed this morning that leaks had reached the press about details of the investigation into the Smolensk air disaster, causing delays in Polish-Russian cooperation over the matter.

96 people died in the crash on the April 10 flight, including President Lech Kaczynski’s delegation to Smolensk for the 70th anniversary of the WWII Katyń massacre.
