Calling Krakow’s Entrepreneurs

Schoolchildren in Krakow can learn about business and earn prizes of up to 500 złoty – by interviewing former graduates who are now successful entrepreneurs.

The competition – Entrepreneur from our school – aims to encourage confidence and research skills among pupils, while celebrating the achievements of self-made businessmen and women in Krakow.

More broadly, organiser Richard Lucas said he wanted the competition to promote debate on improvements to education in Poland. He noted that volunteer speakers from the business sector were an underused but potentially valuable resource for schools.

Mr Lucas, a British businessman living in Krakow and member of the Honorary Committee of Global Entrepreneurship Week, added: “Poland does not yet have the custom of graduates collaborating with their former schools as volunteers. Through this competition we want to introduce such practices, and to achieve several important objectives.”

As well as the educational and community benefits of the competition, Mr Lucas said the competition could help undermine negative images of entrepreneurs by portraying them as men and women who will give up their time for the benefit of their former schools.

Interviews with entrepreneurs can be submitted to the competition board until 31 October 2011. The winners will be announced at a ceremony during Global Entrepreneurship Week, planned for November.
