Zakrzówek closed for renovation

Zakrzówek, a flooded quarry in Krakow which is a popular summer swimming, diving, and party spot, has been closed by the City Green Board for renovation.

A contractor will begin by securing the rock walls of the quarry with mesh to make them safer. The city also plans to construct a playground, paths, and bathing facilities. By 2023, there may be a water sports center, and ecological information center, a restaurant, and more.

The area has been popular with residents since the quarry was filled with water in the 90s, but it perennially ignites debate about its safety because of accidents and deaths which occur there as recently as June of this year. While some welcome the safety measures, others oppose the development of the wild area, including defenders of non-venomous snakes who make their habitat there.
