Polanski in Hospital

The Swiss newspaper Blick reported over the weekend that on Friday Roman Polanski was transported from prison in the city of Winterthur to an unspecified hospital in Zurich, Switzerland.

Apparently, he is to undergo medical tests related to a medical condition that he was already receiving treatment for before his arrest on 26 September. An unnamed Swiss justice official also told Blick that Polanski had complained about stomach pains, and that he is still in detention, even though he is in the hospital. Polanski is expected to return to prison on Monday after the tests are completed.

Polanski’s lawyer, Herve Temime, and the French consul-general Jean-Luc Faure-Tournaire had previously expressed concern about Polanski’s health.

A decision about the 76-year-old Polanski’s release on bail is expected within days. He was previously denied bail on 6 October, and is also awaiting a decision about extradition to the United States for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.
