Buzek Urges Vote for EU Commission President

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso is up for a second term in his position. The vote to determine the next leader will be held this Wednesday, 16 September, and EU Parliament president and former Polish prime minister Jerzy Buzek has urged a quick decision.

In a press release from the European Parliament, Buzek was quoted as saying: “Today’s meeting of the Conference of Presidents came to a clear decision, which sends a strong signal to the citizens of Europe. In this time of economic crisis, we can not afford to continue in a political vacuum. We need to be able to move forward, deciding whether or not Mr. Barroso will be Commission President for the next five years.”

The Conference of Presidents, which includes Buzek and leaders of the EU Parliament’s political groups, announced today that the vote will be held next week.
