Corruption in Poland’s State Insurance

A raid by Internal Security Agency officers, which took place today in Szczecin, brought in some high profile suspects on corruption charges. Amongst five people arrested was the president of ZUS (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych, or the state-run Social Insurance Company), Sylwester R.

The ZUS president had been on the public company’s board since 2004, and was appointed to his current post by Prime Minister Donald Tusk in late 2007. So far, specific charges have not been revealed, though he and four other ZUS employees remain detained while an investigation is underway.
